Age Group: Ideal for Young Children
Ball Size: 3 or 4

Objective

This drill builds on the fundamental Toe Taps exercise by introducing ball movement between feet. It aims to improve coordination, balance, and ball control, helping children manage the ball with precision and ease.

Instructions

Starting Position

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and the ball positioned in front of you.

Execution

  1. Perform a toe tap on the ball with your right foot.
  2. Instead of lifting your foot completely, gently roll the ball toward your left foot using the underside of your toes.
  3. As the ball reaches your left foot, perform another toe tap and roll the ball back to your right foot.
  4. Focus on keeping the ball’s movements small and controlled between each foot.

Rhythm

  • Establish a consistent, steady rhythm.
  • Each movement should be deliberate and controlled rather than rushed.

Repetitions and Sets

  • Start with 20 toe taps with movement, followed by a short rest.
  • Complete 3 sets initially.
  • Gradually increase repetitions and sets as the child’s proficiency improves.

Equipment Needed

  • A soccer ball (size 3 or 4).
  • A flat, obstacle-free area for practice.

Safety Tips

  • Ensure the practice space is clear of hazards.
  • Use appropriate sports shoes for better grip and stability.

Progress Tracking

  • Observe improvements in the smoothness and control of the ball’s movement between feet.
  • Over time, the child should develop a fluid, consistent rhythm.

Challenge

  • Encourage the child to increase the speed of their movements while maintaining ball control.
  • Introduce a counting game: see how many successful taps with movement they can complete in a row without losing control of the ball.

Fun Tip

Make it a playful competition! Time the child for 30 seconds and challenge them to beat their previous record for the number of successful taps with movement. Celebrate progress to keep motivation high.

This engaging drill takes a foundational soccer skill to the next level, building confidence and control in young players while keeping training fun and exciting!
